Presidents Message

My name is Fraser Clarkson and it is my privilege , and my pleasure , to be the Dundee High School FPRFC President for 2015/16.

I follow in the illustrious footsteps of Gerry Tosh and I am delighted – and relieved – to say that Gerry is not “walking away” and will still very much be around Mayfield next season and I look forward to relying on his wise counsel.

We are delighted to welcome our new Head Coach , Colin Sangster, to Mayfield.

Colin is a Dundee lad – indeed a former pupil of Dundee High School – returning “home” , having spent many years living and working in Wick , where he was instrumental in Caithness Rugby Club rise through the ranks of Scottish Rugby , having held the positions of player , captain , coach , Director of Rugby and President.

Colin is a very experienced coach at club and representative level , having worked with Caledonia and Scotland age-groups teams within the SRU for many years.

Colin is currently Head Coach for the Caledonia Under 18 side.

We naturally wish Colin every success in his new role and with Colin in situ , along with his coaching team of JJ Van de Esch , Dougie Gray and Alan Brown , we face the new season with confidence.

Pre season training is now well under way , with encouraging numbers turning up at Mayfield on Tuesday and Thursday evenings , as well as the additional Saturday morning sessions.

A pre season training camp was held in St Andrews on Saturday 1/Sunday 2 August , in which the sessions took place on the beach and at the superb facilities at St Andrews University.

Pre season friendlies have been arranged against Falkirk (a) on 8th August , Stirling County (a) on 15th August and Glasgow Hawks at Mayfield on 22nd August , prior to the opening BT National 1 league fixture against our old rivals , Aberdeen Grammar , at Mayfield on Saturday 29 August.

I am delighted to announce that Thorntons Solicitors are , once again , our Main Sponsors for 2015/16 – we look forward to the continuation of the most fruitful partnership which has developed over the last few season .

Our thanks to Scott Milne , Craig Nicol and the other partners and staff of Thorntons.

In addition , we are delighted to welcome GRC Waste Management as our Shirt Sponsors for season 2015/16 – thanks to Greg Cosgrove and his colleagues and team for their support here.

As mentioned above , it is my pleasure to be your President and I look forward to seeing you at Mayfield this season.

Fraser Clarkson

President , Dundee High Rugby.

TFI Friday 21st Aug 2015 early advance warning!

This is the real thing! This Friday is the official start of the TFI Friday® season. This notice is the online version but hand delivered to selected addresses in Nesbitt St. I hope you are all fit enough and have been doing pre-season TFI training? I have observed some of you enthusiastically preparing on all sorts of premises! I hope you haven’t over done it? We will see! I trust also you have summered well? My own frost bite is almost away and Mags trench foot is as good as is medically possible. Maybe Sept will be our summer? Enough small talk for now.

TFI Friday® kicks off at 5.05 this week in an experiment…Dod willing. There will be FREE nibbles™ on the bar and feel FREE to bring your own contribution. The “guess the wine©” comp makes a welcome return with an accompanying cheese in case of a tie break. Future “Guess the Drink” (new for season 2015/6) may include Gin so watch this space!!!

Rugby news in brief. Great training weekend at St.Andrews, Falkirk game we learned a bit looked promising Titans won well. Stirling game we improved in some areas and good preparation for this week’s task v Glasgow Hawks. The KO on Sat 22nd Aug is 3pm and we have both our teams in action against this Prem 1 opposition. BBQ for “abody” and a busy clubhouse guaranteed. Come and see how Colin Sangster (our new coach) pits his wits against top class opposition! Lots of new faces to find out about. Congratulations to Phil Godman on his appointment at the School. You might even see him on the touchline!

Fraser Clarkson our new President will be in attendance and of course willing to hear all your suggestions on any subject…if you buy him a beer! We also have a new Vice President of the SRU in old boy Robin Flockhart which is great for the Club.

This week in history. Genghis Khan dies 1227 and was still dead at half past. Genghis or Gengy as we would have called him, never played rugby for a number of reasons but he would have been a great no 8. Adolf Hitler became President of Germany this week in 1934 some 54 years after the formation of our rugby club. He never played rugby and wasn’t very good at hockey.
In 1883 (3 years after the formation of the rugby club by the Mayfield gang) Frank James brother of Jesse went on trial in Missouri. In a curious similarity 100 years later we had two of their descendants Roddy (one half of the dangerous brothers) and Hamish join the Rugby Club. Their trial dates TBC.

That’s quite enough nonsense for this week but hope to see many at TFI Friday and the rest of you on the touch line for our 1st league game of the season on Sat 29th Aug v Aberdeen Grammar. Come and see us defend and retain the Dallas Allardice trophy. Lunch Club bargains for the 1st two lunch clubs details from Ron McHoul.
